6 Proven Benefits of Mindful Meditation

orbingThe practice of mindful meditation has been found to improve focus and concentration, emotional regulation, and many other scientifically prove benefits.

Mindful meditation practice has been around for many thousands of years. Now, in the post modern world of the new millennia, science has found that these practices help rewire the makeup of our brains.

  1. Reduces Anxiety In a 2013 Massachusetts General Hospital study, individuals diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) found to have reduced their levels of stress from mindful meditation, more than the control group did.
  2. Reduces Implicit Age and Race Bias. In a 2015 Central Michigan University study by Professor Adam Lueke, found that mindful meditation practitioners were able to be less race and age bias. Studies involved, identifying who a person preferred to set next to, during breakfast. The results were not because the mindful group was able to override there bias, but rather the automatic bias didn’t appear as much as it did in the control groups.
  3. May Prevent and Treat Depression. According to American Psychological Association, found that mindfulness exercises including yoga, body awareness and daily homework, such as eating or doing household chores, with full attention to what one is doing, moment by moment. People at risk of depression, were helped, and found that to prevent depression recurrence, as effective as medication antidepressants did.
  4. Decreased Body Dissatisfaction: Women of all ages, more often experience body dissatisfaction. Researchers, Ellen R. Albertson, Kristin D. Neff and Karen E. Dill-Shackleford, have found that women compared to the control group, experienced an increase in body satisfaction, less body shame, increased self-worth and self compassion.  Source.
  5. Improves Cognitive Function: In the Journal of Consciousness and Cognition 2010, it was found that mindful meditations training, improved mood, reduced fatigue, anxiety and increased mental focus and cognitive function in both working memory and executive functioning. Benefits that were only previously observed with long-term meditators.
  6. Reduces Mental Distractions: Retrains the mind to to focus, concentrate and become more analytical, in the world where our attention is always being pulled in some many different directions at once. Harvard researchers have shown that brain cells use specific frequencies to regulate the flow of information, in much the same way a radio station broadcast in specific frequencies. The Alpha Brainwave, are particularly active during meditation. The brainwave resonating of Alpha processes touch, sight and sound through the brain’s outermost layer, the cortex, where it helps to suppress irrelevant distractions and sensations, thereby enhancing the flow of sensory information between all brain regions.

It’s easier than ever to learn about mindful meditation. Start a daily practice by making a small commitment, for example 2 to 4 minutes, at the beginning of the day. Over a few days, you will find it easier to achieve longer meditation, try it and see for yourself.

Your Inner Physician and You

Inner Physician_Upledger“Your Inner Physician and You” By John E. Upledger DO, OMM.

This book of Dr John Upledger, DO, OMM; helped me a great deal to develop my own trauma informed skills, helped me to work more effectively with intention, listening through touch to my own intuition, tuning into my client’s – body inner wisdom, what Dr Upledger called the “Inner Physician”. The InnerPhysician is an archetypical language, that occurs when we merge into the body’s process, through therapeutic imagery and dialogue to support the release of traumatic emotional content, to support and revitalize the body’s own healing power to self correct itself.

I hope you enjoy the read.

“…This lively book describes the discovery and therapeutic value of the craniosacral system in easy, understandable terms healthcare professionals and laypeople alike can understand. Dr. Upledger’s colorful case histories explain the path that led to his discovery of this exciting medical modality. The book contains a play-by-play account of the development of CranioSacral Therapy, SomatoEmotional Release, and other concepts and techniques”.

What is Ortho-Bionomy?

Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, non-invasive, system of healing that reminds the body of its natural ability to restore balance and health. Its principles are based on a simple and profound philosophy: allow the body to correct itself. The hallmark of Ortho-Bionomy is pain relief. Using soft tissue positional of ease techniques, to trigger the body’s natural neuromuscular relaxation response. The focus is on the neck, mid and low back regions of the spine, and joints like ankles, knees, wrists, elbows and shoulders to release of tensions and pain.

The founder, British-trained Osteopath Arthur Lincoln Pauls, discovered how to gently stimulate the body’s reflexes for self-correction in a way that supports a person’s own healing mechanisms. The body is stimulated using gentle movements, comfortable positioning, brief compression and subtle contact. The result is seemingly effortless pain and tension relief, natural re-alignment, relaxation and a deep sense of well-being. The individual is empowered to participate in their own recovery, and through the process can begin to rediscover the ability to heal and restore comfort, ease and balance back into their body.

Whether looking for relief from specific discomfort or a safe and effective way to ease stress and promote relaxation, Ortho-Bionomy can be very beneficial. It can also work in conjunction with other healing systems. It is not a substitute for appropriate medical care, nutrition or exercise.

What are the benefits of Ortho-Bionomy?

Ortho-Bionomy helps people break the cycle of pain – without creating pain. It is very effective for recovering from injuries, surgery and stress. It aids the recovery by reducing muscle tension, soothing the joints, increasing flexibility and range of movement, improving circulation and relaxing the entire body.

How many sessions is it going to take to fix this?

cropped-20150517_120213.jpgA first time, CranioSacral Therapy client can often have hidden expectations. That some how their post concussion syndrome, headaches, TMJ-D, neck or back pain can be resolved in just one session. Too often the CST practitioners leaves it up to the client to know when to rebook a session.

Craniosacral Therapists are trained to believe their client’s “inner wisdom” will tell them when it’s time for another session. But here’s the problem with that, through all their pain and stress, the client usually can not hear the still, small voice of their intuition. Which is why the client needs a fierce and honest advocate.

An Ounce of Framing Is Worth a Pound of Reframing (Attributed to Judy DeLozier)

Framing lets someone know in advance what’s going to happen. And what they should expect, and experience so they come back for the help they sorely need.

So when a new client asks “How many sessions is it going to take to fix this?”

I like to follow up by saying “I’m glad you asked”.

Of course, every individual is unique. So while some conditions may resolve in a single session, more often it’s like peeling away the layers of an onion. We release soft-tissue restrictions layer by layer until we get to the core issue that’s been holding all the others in place, then the condition can be corrected by the body’s own healing wisdom.

So while I can’t tell you exactly how many sessions it’ll take for your issue to resolve, I promise you this at the end of each session, I’ll give you my honest opinion about whether I believe you could use another session. Or whether you’re good to go.

Before I start the first session, I like to say this, many people ask me how many sessions it’ll take for their particular challenge to be resolve, and I’ll tell you what I tell them. I will give you my honest opinion at the end of the session.

Often the client will appreciate the honesty.

6 Ways CranioSacral Therapy Facilitates Brain Health

Chronic Neck and Back Pain

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is an effective pain management technique for chronic neck and back pain, it focuses on releasing soft-tissue tensions and restrictions along the dura mater, of the brain and spinal cord. Combined with Massage Therapy and CranioSacral Therapy’s alternative healing practices often enhance the body’s own self correcting mechanism. Advanced CST complements allopathic medical, physical and occupational treatment protocols for neck and back pain relief.  4 to 6 CST sessions are recommended.

Migraines and Headaches

Massage Therapy has been shown in some studies to be more effective than Acupuncture for migraine pain, and equally effective for tension headaches.

CranioSacral Therapy stems from osteopathic practice, is a very gentle soft-tissue manipulative approach, intending to restore balance and function of the cerebrospinal rhythm, which circulates cerebrospinal fluid within the semi-hydralic system of the membrane systems of the spinal cord and brain,  the craniosacral system. This continuous membranous system, that includes the cranium, spine and sacrum is called the dura mater, meaning the hard mother. It is the tough, fibrous membrane forming the outermost of the three coverings of the brain and spinal cord.

A series of 4-6 treatments have been reported in practice to be very effective for both migraine and tension headache sufferers and benefits may be long-lasting.   Source Reference: Migraines and Tension Headaches.

Lost & Found

At times, I reminded that I can be a bit spacey. For instance, I will come in after work, take my shoes off, plop my things down and slump down into a comfy chair. Then, after a few minutes, I will have trouble about recalling where I put my iPhone, my notebook and where I left my “freakin” keys. It is frustrating at times. I’ve been like this for as long, as I can remember.  I know this happens because of stresses, mental and otherwise that I haven’t yet taken the time to unwind from. My long hours, at my day job can do that to me at times.

It seems like, the more I try to find the item that I’ve lost, the more it is lost to me. When it comes to finding my things, I have to stop trying.

Stop trying comes much easier, when I become playful like a child, for the purpose of engaging my subconsciousness. Somewhere in my mind, I am aware where my lost item is, so the first course of action is to do something entirely different, give yourself permission to relax.

After a few moments of just breathing, relaxing and listening to the silence, I open my mind’s active imagination. Sometimes, I playful move about the house not by retracing my steps, but by mentally playing with a magic wand, casting orbs of light out with my intention;  “Reveal Yourself!”

I know, it sounds a bit too Harry Potter like, but it is works. You should give it a try, next time you need to find something you lost.

Heart Meditation

Easy Alchemy begins when you learn to drop your mental awareness into your heart’s sacred space.

Your spiritual, physical and emotional health can be revitalized when you learn to yoke your mind with your heart’s sacred space.

Emotional fear, anger and depression can really knock you off balance Left untreated these dark energetic flows often lead to low self esteem, relationship problems, health issues and addictions. Worst, without any impulse control, it can even lead to some jail time.

We are all challenged by our own mental and emotional stresses, they are often the source of much suffering.

Hello, my name is Claude Barrett, I’m a licensed massage therapist and an Advanced CranioSacral Therapist. I have been a holistic practitioner since 1991.

I have developed a program, I call Quantum InnerQI that brings together some easy alchemy, energetic and meditation concepts and methods to help location and rebalance energetic flows.

One of the most important concepts I’ve ever learned for a successful energetic healing session, whether you are working on yourself, a friend or client to restore, revitalize and regain balance is the Heart Meditation.

Heart Meditation is a powerful anchor, one that I use everyday in my own personal life and in my practice. It begins by tuning into the Heart and turning on the light.

Here is an easy alchemy – meditation formula that can help:

  • Breath and move your mental focus inward and become aware of your breathe. Tune in and observe yourself. Breathing in and breathing out.  Gather all impressions of being here now. Set aside your mental chatter.
  • Then after a few moments, relax and move your mental focus from your breathe and down into your heart space. Become aware of your heart’s vital force. Observe, listen and imagine moving your awareness into your heart space. It’s easy, focus mentally on your own heart space. Relax.
  • And go deeper. Now imagine yourself inside your heart space, once inside, reach up and switch on the “Light”. Let the light fill up your heart space. It is your heart’s spark of Grace, the Source of all that is, the core of your being. That connects you to all things. Relax.
  • And go deeper. Now create a circle of light around yourself, visualize a hoola hoop of light encircling yourself. Standing inside your circle of light, orb and arc your heart’s light out into every aspect, cell, molecule and level of your being. Connect to the Source, your Sacred Connection above, below and with in. Inside your heart’s circle of light,  call in your spiritual guides for help, guidance and protection.
  • Then place your intention, the purpose of your session in the center of your heart space and give thanks, a blessing be.
  • Now Release. Return for a moment to normal levels of awareness. Then merge back into your heart’s circle. Observe and notice what has changed.
  • End your session. Feeling refreshed, revitalized and renewed.
  • Return to your wakeful level of the mind and consciousness.

For example, to balance all your emotional, rationality or fears, just ask for help to balance all your emotional levels and anchor them in the core of you being. Then release. Observe and notice what has changed.

The more you practice these easy Quantum InnerQi methods, the stronger your sacred connection and intuitive function becomes.

Clue: Be playfully present, imagine and visualize. The transformative experience begins when you have crossed over and into the realm beyond make-believe.

Love and Enlighenment

When I first began practicing meditation, I was asked to learn the difference between Buddha and Yeshua; (Hebrew name of Jesus) “How did these two phenomenal holy men of history achieve spiritual enlightenment?”

I took the traditional seated position on the floor, my back straight and my legs crossed in front of me. Then after a few moments of watching my breathe, I moved my awareness into my hands, simply by being aware of the palms of my hands. Then I counted down and dropped my awareness into my heart space. Then I gave thanks and ask for a blessing.

In my first meditation session, I imagined and visualized Buddha seated in front of me, facing me in the same meditative pose, as my own. As I meditated, my attention was pulled inside Buddhas’ Mind. Once inside, I was pulled into the galactic sea, where I flew into spiraling stars of the heavens and I was pulled into infinity.  In that single moment, I felt a connection with all humanity and all my relations. I felt a oneness with all that is.

In my second meditation session, I focused on Yeshua. Like before, in my first session, I imagined and visualized Yeshua seated in front of me, mirroring my own seated meditation pose.

A veil, opened up in my mind’s eye and pulled my attention inside Yeshua’s heart. Again, like before I was moved into heaven’s stars and into infinity.

In conclusion, I learned that Buddha achieved Love and Enlightenment through his mind’s eye, while Yeshua achieved Love and Enlightenment through his own heart chakra, both are valid paths.

Afterwards, I felt I understood a bit more about enlightenment, than I did before. It was much easier, than I was ever lead to believe. The key to success, is to get out of your own way.

There Is No Spoon

Remember that scene from Matrix, the Movie, after the kid finishes bending the spoon like a wet noodle with his mind, he tells Neo, who is awl stuck about the spoon bending; “Don’t try to bend the spoon, that’s impossible, instead only try to realize the truth . . . there is no spoon. Then you will see that it’s not the spoon that bends, it’s only yourself.”

The key to understanding the meaning here, is to realize that the spoon that Neo holds in his hand is both solid and not solid. It is mode of both subtle energy and material. Like all things, we are all connected at the subatomic levels of our DNA cells.

When Neo drops into an alter-state of consciousness and merges his awareness into the spoon’s quantum level, the spoon’s wave function, opens up as it is observed. In Neo’s mind he sees both, the solid mass of the spoon and the same spoon bending like a noodle, as it reflects infinite possibilities In Quantum Physics, that is called collapsing the wave. This is the point where you can drop in your intention, for help, information and transformation.

At this level of awareness, we can realize that the spoon is just apart of ourselves. Max Planck, founder of Quantum Physics, described this quantum level of the universe as the “matrix” the source and intelligences of all things.

Quantum InnerQI Healing and Alchemy is just like that, if you need help, information  and transformation, doesn’t come from trying to bend spoons – because that is impossible. It comes from melding, mentally gazing inward and moving your awareness and intention into the wave function of the “spoon”. Then you will realize that it’s only an extension of yourself, moving into resonance with the Quantum Field – where all help, information and transformation are possible.

“We are all entangled” ~Deepak Chopra, MD

Biblically speaking, this is the level of consciousness where you must go to, get an answer to prayer, for help, information and transformation. This is where miracles spring forth from.

“Ask and ye shall receive, knock and the door will be open”.

Most people deny, judge and have cut themselves off from this level of awareness, cause it is socially unacceptable, it’s taboo or a big humbug.  They don’t grasp the greater reality of the force of creation that flows through all of us. They believe that only an enlightened soul, a guru, a saint and be a healer. This perceptional bias is the source of much of the suffering in this world.

I believe we all have an innate Sacred Connection, a Spark of Divinity, which I call the “Quantum InnerQi” and that all connected to the Pure Source of all Miracles “

Heart Meditation

When you pray or meditate tonight, affirm this ultimate truth, that there is a spark of heaven within your heart.  Place your intentions there and you too will be a witness to miracles, get help, information and transformation for yourself and for your relations.
