CranioSacral Therapy, & it’s adjunct SomatoEmotional Release

A straight forward 3 stage approach was originally developed by the late Dr John E. Upledger D.O., O.M.M. to insure that the client can receive the maximum benefit of a CranioSacral Therapy.

Stage One

The CST Ten Step Protocol focuses on the membrane and soft tissues of the Central Nervous System. The Ten Step Protocol was developed to mobilize the flexible components of the Central Nervous System and eliminate any restrictions to its proper mobility. The facilitator follows the the CranioSacral rhythm throughout the body to locate and release any tensions along the length of spinal code and cranial membranes. Key focus areas are the cranium and the sacrum. By applying a gentle and light touch, about 5 grams of pressure, the facilitator mobilizes the soft tissues and membranes of the cranium and sacrum.

Stage Two

Known as the “Avenue of Expression”, is the areas that extends from the eyebrows to the collar bones. Theses are the structures, tissues, fluids and energies involved in the expression of words, images, feelings and so on. Each of these components have at least some influence over the ability of the client’s ability to express him\herself. These expressions can either be in words, sounds, or expressions of emotions.

The session focuses on the structures of the face and neck. This includes the muscles of the neck that connect with the hyoid bone and the bones of the face and jaw.  Some of this work is done inside the mouth. It is of the utmost importance that the Avenue of Expression are opened before proceeding to Stage Three.

Stage Three

SomatoEmotional Release ® is based on the concept that the whole body as well as each of its cells, tissues, viscera, and systems having an independent and yet integrated body unconsciousnesses, which is often referred to as a Soft Tissue memory.

This approach involves releasing disruptive and blocked energies that have been lodged in the soft-tissues of the body that originally occurred during the traumatic injury.

Dr. Upledger coined the term “energy cysts” to describe these anomalies, which are found in soft-tissue regions of the body and often loaded with negative emotional content. Left untreated, these regions can lead to a decline in the body’s health.

SomatoEmotional Release® is very effective method for aiding the body’s own self healing ability. The CranioSacral Therapist works to support the client, to help identify and release these areas of the body that are holding these “energy cysts”. Releases are always based on individual experiences and circumstances and are facilitated through the cooperation of the body’s deep unconsciousness.

The progression through the 3 Stages are dependent on the individual progress of the client. Each stage depends on the preceding stage. The majority of sessions will more than likely be spent on Stage 3.

SomatoEmotional Release® is very effective in releasing emotions that are stored in the body’s tissue, which in turn helps the body facilitate its own healing. As the stored emotions are processed and released, the body has a greater ability to improve its total health.
